The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Directors, Board Chairmen and Heads of Department and Agencies of the ministry,  have met in Sunyani, the  Bono Regional, capital for a two (2) day retreat to review the sector’s performance.

The workshop is under the theme “synergizing the core mandate, roles and functions of the directorates, departments and agencies of the ministry.

The 2 day retreat was to afford the Ministry and it’s Agencies the opportunity to reflect on their programmes and projects, strategies and challenges encountered to enable them forge the way forward.  It was also to share ideas, build synergies and forge collaboration between various institutions under the Ministry.

In his opening remarks, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah who Chaired the workshop,  commended management for the hard work done so far and encouraged them to forge ahead to do better in the remaining days of the year.

The Minister also touched on the issues of sacrifice, saying he and his deputy have sacrificed to ensure that Agencies of the Ministry are equipped basic logistics to work.  In further explanation, the Minister indicated that, he has agreed with management to use all of the ministry’s Capex effective 2017 to purchase vehicles and other logistics to facilitate the work of these Departments and Agencies.

He disclosed that the Capex of 2017 was used to purchase 5 Pick-Up Vehicles for the Department of Factories Inspectorate (DFI) to facilitate their work. According to him, that of 2018 has been allocated to the Department of Cooperatives and the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI) while that of 2020 will be expended on the Labour Department (LD).

Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah also announced that statistics on unemployment show that it has reduced drastically from 11.68 to 3.68 per the latest 2017 metadata of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The Minister used the opportunity to inform Heads of Department and Agencies that the Ministry’s turn for the Meet-the-Press Series will be held on Thursday, 15th August, 2019. He said, his focus would be mainly on Pensions and Pension related matters and therefore encouraged all heads of Department and Agencies to be in attendance.

The retreat commenced at 8:30am and ended at 5:30pm each day. It was made up of presentations by all the respective Heads of Department and Agencies, the four line directors, plenary sessions as well as group presentations.

At the end of the programme, a roadmap will be developed to handle generic issues, address overlaps among others.

In all, a total of 34 participants attended the two day retreat.
